10 Best Cloth Diapers for Boys in 2024 (That Don’t Leak)

All diapers work with boys and girls, but there are some differences in diapering boys.

Girls need the most absorbency in the middle of the diaper; boys need max absorbency at the front of the diaper.

Best cloth diapers for boys are super absorbent and provide enough breathing room.

PS! When diapering, it’s important to point boy bits down. Otherwise, the pee will spray out the top of the diaper.

Difference Between Boys’ and Girls’ Cloth Diapers

There are no specific cloth diapers for just boys or girls; however, boys and girls have different diapering needs.

For example, girls need the most absorbency in the middle of the diaper, but boys need max absorbency at the front of the diaper. The different absorbency needs are based on where their genitals are located.

Because of the different absorbency needs, pocket diapers may work better for girls, whereas prefolds or all-in-twos are excellent for boys.

Typically with prefolds and All-in-twos, it is easier to adjust the absorbent layers towards the front of the diaper.

However, any cloth diaper can work for either gender, so if you have a boy first and then a girl or vice versa, you don’t need to purchase a new set of diapers. You may, however, need to adjust how you cloth diaper.

Cloth Diapering Tips for Boys

There are a few key things to keep in mind when cloth diaper boys: positioning, absorbency, diaper rise, and how to fold diapers specifically for boys versus girls.

Be Ready for Peeing

As a mom of two boys, I can not emphasize this enough: boys will pee on you, so be ready! You won’t be able to prevent every accident, but you can stop most with a bit of know-how.

The best thing you can do is have a clean, dry diaper ready to go. As soon as you remove the soiled diaper, place the dry diaper over their penis; if they do pee, it will be on a diaper and not you.

If you have a messy diaper and need to do some clean-up, use a dry wipe or burp cloth instead of a clean diaper.

Direct the Position Down

When putting a clean diaper on, it is essential to point their penis down before fastening the diaper. Then, when your little guy pees, the urine will soak into the diaper and not spray out the top of the diaper.

This crucial tip will prevent a lot of leaks and the need to change clothing. Unfortunately, I didn’t know this tip before having my first son and learned it the hard way and after a lot of laundry.

Add Absorbency to the Right Place

The best washable diapers for boys allow parents to adjust absorbency where needed most. For example, boys need more absorbency in the front of the diaper where their penis is.

This is because the front of the diaper is where the most urine will go. So, if you don’t use proper absorbency, your baby will feel wet faster.

Therefore prefolds, flats, and all-in-twos which are easy to adjust the placement of boosters are the best options for boys.

Check the Rise

The diaper’s rise is the height of the front of the diaper. Cloth diapers typically have adjustable rises that allow parents to lengthen or shorten the rise as needed. Boys need a higher rise because most of their wetness is in the front of the diaper.

You may have to play around with the rise before achieving the perfect fit but start with the highest rise, comfortable for your baby and his belly.

Boy Folds for Prefolds and Flats

When using prefolds or flats, there are different ways you can fold the diaper to adjust absorbency. If you use fitted diapers, you can also use flats or prefolds as boosters.

For example, the trifold, angel wing fold, and diaper bag fold are good choices for boys because they add absorbency upfront.

There are online tutorials that outline how to achieve different folds. Additional folds that also work well for boys are the newspaper fold, bikini fold, and origami fold.
